Instead of Obsessing About the Numbers on the Scale, She Just Kept Going! Read the Inspiring Story of Dedication with Yinka Rufai’s Weight Loss Story

“My goal is to make a difference–whether others just need someone to share their experiences in order to avoid making the same mistakes as I have, or whether others just have no motivation and need to see my natural drive in order to get empowered.” – These are the words of a young lady who decided to work hard at changing what she looked like. Weighing 260 pounds, Yinka Rufai knew she was overweight. However, she had tried all sorts of diets and weight loss programs because of what people said and how everyone thought it was a  good idea for her to lose weight. When Yinka decided to do it FOR HERSELF, she began to see the difference. She worked hard and tirelessly to get to the weight she desired. She has gone on to pay it forward, encouraging others and sharing her story to all who feel like giving up on their quest. We were really inspired by Yinka’s story of how she walked the road to her goal and we hope you are too.
Who I Am
My name is Yinka Rufai. I am a 25-year-old young adult from Chicago, IL. I currently work as an actuarial consultant for one of the big four accounting and consulting firms in the nation. I am aspiring to become a credentialed actuary. I am a nerd at heart and I love numbers. I have two older brothers, one younger sister and two of the most amazing parents. I love my parents so much for being so supportive throughout my life. They pushed me to focus on education and to always accomplish my goals. I was 260 pounds. I was clearly overweight. I ate a lot and as a result I constantly gained weight from that. My family and friends used to pick at me all the time about my size. I tried so many unhealthy extreme fad diets in my past as a result of that. And of course they never worked.

Why I Decided to Lose Weight

Police in Shanghai have charged the couple with human trafficking after accepting money for the baby, who was born at home and still only weeks, or months old, when sold.

No, thank you: ASUU strike continues as lecturers refuse FG’s N600 billion offer

Despite continued efforts and promises of more financing made by the Federal Government, striking lecturers under the aegis of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have refused to budge.

According to reports, despite a meeting to seek resolution yesterday, the lecturers insisted that the three-month-old strike would go on.

The Nation reports:

More cash has been pledged for projects on the campuses. Besides, the earned allowances due to the teachers have been increased from the initial N30 billion offer, which the  rejected. The teachers are insisting on the 2009 agreement, which they say President Goodluck Jonathan was part of. Besides, they say, they do not trust the government.

According to a circular by the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Otuoke, Bayelsa State, Prof. Bolaji Aluko, to the staff of the school, quoted yesterday by the news website, Sahara Reporters, the government has pledged to spend N200 billion on the universities in the 2014 budget and the same amount annually for the next three to four years.

This is in addition to the N100 billion already made available this year, but which ASUU has rejected.

The government has also increased to N40 billion, as a first installment, funds for the payment of earned allowances to the striking lecturers – an improvement from the N30 billion previously released.

On the earned allowances, Aluko said: “Government will top it up with further releases once universities are through with the disbursement of this new figure of N40 million. So, Vice-Chancellors are urged to expedite this disbursement within the shortest possible time using guiding templates that have been sent by the CVC,” the circular said.

Aluko said the latest development followed meetings on September 19 and Oct 11 of representatives of the Association of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities, led by its Chairman, Prof. Hamisu of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) and ASUU representatives led by its President, Dr. Nasir Fagge, with Vice-President Namadi Sambo and Minister of Education Nyesome Wike.

A source in the Ministry of Education last night also confirmed that the meeting took place.

“But the government decided to leave the announcement of the decision to the ASUU chiefs,” the source said.

It was gathered that Sambo urged ASUU to call off the strike, as he apologised for the “take-it-or-leave-it” comments credited to Minister of Finance Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala at the beginning of the strike. The Minister did not seem to have been involved in either meeting, perhaps as the government’s way of soothing the feelings of the university teachers.

Why all Nigerian airports are not certified —Investigation

Aviation industry regulator, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, is yet to certify any of the 22 airports in the country because the airports have been unable to meet the requirements on the regulator’s checklist particularly in the area of security and safety in the last 20 years.
Saturday PUNCH learnt that NCAA had never certified any airport in the country since 2006 when the law that gave it autonomy to certify airports in line with international regulations was promulgated.  A source close to the agency told our correspondents that none of the airports in the country was certified before NCAA’s autonomy.
Saturday PUNCH gathered that the items on the checklist had to do with two major issues. They are security and safety. The security aspect has to do with control of access to the airport’s sterile areas or airside and the security of other major points like the catering departments, boarding gates, check-in points and perimeter fencing.  The safety aspect, on the other hand, has to do with runway light, taxi way light, approach light, fire station and airport emergency response system, among others.
The essence of airport certification is to ascertain if there are enough personnel and equipment that can guarantee safety and security in any airport.
But Saturday PUNCH learnt that though the airports in the country had been given the checklist applicable globally, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria was  yet to comply with the requirements on the checklist, especially the ‘open items.’
“The checklist is with FAAN. We have decided to start with MMIA and Nnamdi Azikiwe  International Airport, Abuja. Certifying the airports is going to be in batches; once FAAN meets the requirements, we will certify the MMIA and Abuja,” a top official of the NCAA, who pleaded anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the matter said.
He said as soon as the regulatory authority certified the MMIA and NAIA, it would move to license other airports in the country.
It was learnt on Thursday that FAAN had been battling lately to close the ‘open items’ on the checklist.
Although the MMIA, NAIA and other airports in the country were yet to be certified by the NCAA, regulatory authority officials said the situation did not mean the airports were not safe for operation.
According to them, it only meant that certain aircraft and certain operations could not be carried out in these airports.
Officials knowledgeable about the process said the NCAA checklist contained a number of safety and security issues which must be met.
The officials said the entire checklists of which some had been ‘closed’ while others still remained ‘open items’ were  under several categorisations.
An official close to the certification, who spoke under condition of anonymity, said, “Under the security issues, we have a number of items under airport access control, catering department, cargo department, personnel, boarding gate, perimeter fencing and sterile area. Each of these has a lot of items under them. Some have been closed, while a few still remain open.”
“Under the safety issues, we also have items which include runway light, approach light, taxiway light, fire station among others. All these safety and security issues are subdivided into several areas. We have more than a hundred items. Some have been closed while a few are still remaining. As soon as FAAN closes them, they will invite us and we will certify the airports. From there, we will move to others.”
The General Manager, Corporate Communications, FAAN, Mr. Yakubu Dati, said the issue of non-certification of the airports was an age-long problem occasioned by negligence of past ministers of aviation in the country.
The situation, according to him, was one of the reasons the Minister of Aviation, Mrs. Stella Oduah, came up with the ongoing airport remodelling programme. He said as soon as the remodelling was completed, the airports would be re-presented for certification.
He expressed confidence that the airports would be certified, adding that a lot of works were currently ongoing at the MMIA and other airports in the country.
However, Dati stressed that, “This does not mean that our airports are not safe. Our airports are very safe and secure. Remember that before American airlines started flying to Nigeria, the United States Transportation Safety Administration officials came here and examined MMIA and approved it safe and secure. In fact, they gave us impressive marks. If the airports were not safe, all these foreign airlines, including American carriers would not have been operating  in Nigeria. It is just that getting the airport certified by our own NCAA is just necessary.”
However, a former Military Commandant of the MMIA, Group Captain John Ojikutu, noted that no airport in the country had been certified.
He said some of the issues that might have been barring the regulatory authority from doing so might be related to lack of perimeter fence in some of the airports, poor lighting system and infrastructure in general.
He said, “To the best of my knowledge, no airport has been certified, and the only agency that can give such certification in the country is the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority. But we know that it is almost impossible for the agency to certify any airport in the country because of the basic infrastructure that the airports are lacking.”
“For instance, we can see from the incident that occurred in Benin recently, with the stowaway boy, that there was no security fence in that airport and that was how that boy penetrated. You cannot operate an airport safely without a security fence. Again, a look around the airports would show that runway lighting for most of the airports is inadequate.”
He said that airports must put all those facilities in place before the NCAA could get them certified.
The President, Centre for Aviation Safety and Research, Mr. Sheri Kyari, said the NCAA needed to take safety issues such as the licensing of the airport very seriously, noting that this was a major challenge of the aviation sector.
He said, “The NCAA really has to do something about the fact that our airports are not certified. With the way things are going now, I think they have to refocus on that, because it is a safety issue.’’
He urged the regulators to look into the issue with utmost care, explaining that the fact that airports in the country were not privatised was also a major issue that was hindering the certification. He said, “Licensing and certification is mainly for airports that have been privatised and by the time government decides to privatise our airports, it will make a lot of different

Mother of Lagos plane crash victim: Samson died after I lost my husband, daughter within three days

The Agege, Lagos residence of the Hassans still maintained a gloomy silence a week after Samson Hassan, 27, along with some other passengers, died following the October 3, 2013 crash of an Associated Airline charter aircraft.
Samson was a photojournalist, working with MIC Caskets, which lost its Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Tunji Okusanya, his son, Olatunji Okusanya (Jnr) and four other employees in the crash.
Samson’s family members said the household would never be the same again, following his death. In the house where Samson grew up, his aged mother, Christiana, who seemingly stared into space, intermittently sighed deeply, muttering to herself.
As sympathisers arrived and left, offering their condolences, Christiana kept repeating to herself, “my son, my joy, my pride.”
Christiana’s grief has been profound. Five months ago, she lost her husband and a daughter within three days, to undisclosed illnesses.
She said, “What I face is bigger than what any other person may be facing. Since my husband fell ill and died, Samson had been my father and my mother. He came to see me every Saturday, handling all the family responsibilities. He would call to encourage me and tell me not to worry at all.
“As young as he was, he was a pillar to this family, especially since my husband’s death. My husband was in the hospital and I was tending to him, meanwhile, my daughter was also ill at home. I got back home and met my daughter dead. My daughter (Samson’s elder sister) died on a Sunday and I think it was the news of her death that killed my husband in the hospital on Tuesday. This was just five months ago; now this has befallen me again.”
The news of Samson’s death had come as a shock to Christiana, who was not aware that her son was flying to Akure on the morning of the crash. Initially, all she heard about the crash was that Samson’s boss, Okusanya, was in the plane and that there were survivors.
She said, “That morning, he called his wife to tell her that he was travelling, but his wife’s phone battery was flat, so they couldn’t  finish the conversation. When I heard about the crash and that his boss was involved, I was hurt, because his boss was a very nice man. We were even praying for all the surviving victims of the crash, not knowing that my son was among the dead.
“We started calling Samson’s number but it kept ringing. We thought he was busy tending to the crisis situation since his boss was in the crash. I knew he would also be part of the work his boss was going for, but I thought he was going by road.”
Christiana said it was later in the day that some relatives went to the hospital to find out about Hassan since no family member could reach him on the phone.
She said, “When they (relatives) got to the hospital, they were told that there was a survivor whose identity was still unknown. But the following morning when they went back there, they were able to see him. I was told that his body was swollen but that they could recognise him.
“Later, they were told that he was moved to Gbagada General Hospital (special burns unit), but by Sunday morning, when our people left for Gbagada to see him and I was preparing to go to church to continue to pray for him, our pastor and some others came and began preaching to me. From the way they were talking, I knew something was wrong. I shouted that they should not mistake my Samson for someone else. I didn’t know that the Gbagada where they claimed to have taken him would be his way to the mortuary.”
Samson  is survived by a wife and two children, a two-year-old boy and a baby less than two months old. Meanwhile, Hassan had been responsible for the welfare of the two children left behind by his deceased sister, aged seven and four.
Christiana said, “My Samson had been the one taking care of all of us. I’m old and I’ve stopped work since I had an accident that affected my legs. Samson had been the one taking care of the family. He was a very nice and loving child.”
However, Christiana appealed for assistance from the government and well-meaning Nigerians, describing keeping the four children, Samson’s  and her sister’s, in school, as the biggest challenge facing her.
She said, “If they give me money, I will finish it but my concern is for these children. Samson was responsible for their education and now that he is no more, I will appeal to the government to assist us. These children need to be in school; that was Samson’s wish also.”
The last person to see Samson alive was his guardian, Mr. Segun Shobiye, who had introduced him to photography at a young age and through whom he also met and started working for Okusanya.
Shobiye, the owner of Posh Magazine, said he had acted in a godfather capacity for Samson since he was 13 years old.
He said, “His (Samson) sister was my god-daughter. He was about 13 years when he was brought to me to learn the work. I was into photography and when we started Posh Magazine in 2007, naturally, he joined us.”
Shobiye said his hopes were high after receiving news that Samson was still alive on Friday, the day after the crash.
He said, “Initially, when we heard about an unnamed person also surviving the crash, my editor, Bola Oke, said the person would be Samson because we knew him to be very strong. It was because of his strength that we dubbed him ‘Omo Aiye.’
He recalled sometime ago when Samson suffered an injury in the arm during a riot in his area, he still showed up for work after getting himself treated at the hospital.
Shobiye said, “He kept saying the cut wasn’t much until we saw it. That was the kind of person Samson was. So, our hopes were up when we heard that he survived, so we went to the hospital. On the way, we kept praying that he should live up to his name, ‘Omo Aiye’ and live. But I was standing by him at the hospital, the tone of the life-support machine changed and I called the nurses. The nurses said ‘no problem’ but by the time we got outside, we got news that he had died.”
Shobiye, who had visible goose pimples each time he spoke about Samson, wept continuously  during his narration.
“I believe that being the last person to see him alive shows the kind of bond between us. He was a very good guy. He taught my daughter to eat biscuits because he liked biscuits so much. My daughter still cries till now,” he said.
Oke, who also worked with Samson, before he joined MIC Caskets, described him as “trustworthy.”
She said, “Samson would never disappoint you. If he said he was coming, then he was coming. I always say that it’s easier to make Samson laugh than make him cry because he didn’t take anything too personal. He would never complain.”

It’s a miracle! Woman, 56, gives birth to twins after 31 years of marriage

A 56-year-old woman has defied the laws of nature and given birth after 31 years of marriage.

Mary Anike Ajayi had a hitch free natural delivery and gave birth to a set of twin girls much to the amazement and awe of her friends and family.

The twins have been named Goodness and Mercy by their overjoyed mother and their father who is no spring chicken himself at 64 years of age.

Daily Trust reports:

Weekly Trust gathered that the couple tied the nuptial knot on December 18, 1982. Until now, both had vainly waited on the Lord for the fruit of the womb. And for those trying years, she lamented, it was so challenging. “I was traumatized psychologically and felt like giving up hope of ever carrying my own children,” she said.

However, Mrs. Ajayi, who teaches at the Muslim College, Oke-Ila, Ado-Ekiti could not hide her joy on September 29, when she entered the labour room and after 15 minutes of labour, he became the proud mother of twins.

The highly elated mother said: “I got married to my husband on December 18, 1982 and since then I have been waiting on the Lord for the fruit of the womb but to no avail. The experience of 31 years is not a joke. It is through the grace of God that I was able to sail through it.

“At times, I would be unhappy and depressed, even in the midst of my colleagues and friends when they are rejoicing for one thing or the other. But in the Church of the Lord where I worship, they would call us out and pray for those of us looking for the fruits of the womb. That gave me the courage to trust in God that one day God in His mercy would answer my prayer and it happened,” she recounted.

MAN LOCKS UP GF'S PANTS WITH PADLOCK

Pictures: Man Locks Up Gf's Pants With Padlock To Prevent Her From Cheating

Wonders shall never end oh....A 40 years old man was arrested for locking up his girlfriend's pants using a chastity belt for years just so that she won't cheat on him!
According to CNN, the man's abused, unidentified 25-year-old Mexican girlfriend recently had to tell cops about the abuse after she was left unable to go to the bathroom for several hours because she couldn’t unlatch the padlock on her jeans.
The agonizing pain prompted the woman — who lives in Zacatlame, a poverty-stricken community in the Mexican Gulf state of Veracruz — to go to the police.
She said she was too afraid of her 40-year-old boyfriend to grab a pair of scissors and cut the belt loop to which the lock was attached.
The man got arrested and he admitted to locking his girlfriend's pants and gave cops the key.
Police were ready to make sure he paid for abusing his girlfriend but were shocked when the woman refused to press charges once her abusive boyfriend was detained.
Unable to do anything, the police had to let the suspect free after a few hours.
The following day however,  the suspect was made to sign a statement promising never again to use a padlock on his girlfriend or abuse her in any other way.

ENUGU STATE PULLS DOWNS MOUNTAIN OF FIRE CHURCH HEADQUARTERS

Enugu State Pulls Down Mountain Of Fire Church Headquarters

Officials of Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority on Thursday demolished the regional headquarters of the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries in Enugu State.
And this they say they did in order to pave way for early completion of a major road.
Despite prayers from worshippers, who gathered at the church premises in the Enugu metropolis, the ECTDA officials went on to pull down the church building.
Punch reports that the worshippers had initially refused to leave the church hall and preferred that they be buried with the collapsing walls. But when the bulldozer made the first touch, members of the church, who were already praying, took cover.
Three bulldozers pulled down the structures close to the waterway amidst tight security, with officers and men of the police force and members of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps on hand at the site.
Regional Pastor of the church, Ude Ogaranya, described the exercise as an abomination and a rape on justice.
But while trying to defend their act,  the State government said they gave the leadership of the church more than one year to relocate the church from the waterway where it was built. That they even allocated some hectares of land to the church elsewhere not minding that it flouted its order not to build on the waterway.
But Pastor Kennedy Udeogaranya insists that the government should have extended the deadline for the demolition to enable the leadership of the church to settle in the new location. He said:
“This is the headquarters of the church in Enugu and we thought that the government should have allowed us some time to move to the new site.
Some of our property are still inside the church and we did not have the opportunity to remove them before the demolition."
Udeogaranya confirmed that the government gave the church a new site to build another church but solicited for compensation to enable it to put up new structures.
“We spent a lot of money building the church and offices in the premises. We are appealing to the government to compensate us,’’ he said.

PLUMBER HELD OVER INVESTIGATION FOR SWALLOWING 57 WRAPS OF COCAINE

Plumber held over ingestion of 57 wraps of cocaine

okechukwu
A plumber, Ogu Okechukwu, has been apprehended by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, for the importation of 945grammes of cocaine.
In a statement by the NDLEA Head of Public Affairs, Mitchell Ofoyeju, on Thursday, Okechukwu was said to have ingested 57 wraps of cocaine which was detected at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.
The suspect, who was on his way back from Brazil, was arrested during the inward screening of passengers on an Etihad flight from Abu Dhabi.
The NDLEA Airport Commander, Hamza Umar, said the cocaine wraps were packed into male condoms.
He said, “Okechukwu excreted 57 wraps of powdery cocaine packed inside male condoms and sealed with cello-tape.
“It is a dangerous practice because many drug traffickers have died as a result of leakage in such wraps of narcotics.”
The suspect in his confessional statement claimed he was lured into drug trafficking because of his inability to pay his rent of N150,000.
Okechukwu said, “I am a plumber. I am married with two children and my wife just delivered our second baby. I had no money to pay my rent of N150,000.
“I was introduced to drug trafficking in my search for funds; I was to get N300,000 to bring the drug from Brazil. My travel expenses were sponsored.
“While in Brazil, I was given 100 wraps of drugs to swallow but I could only take 57 because it was my first time and it was not easy to ingest. I am unhappy that I involved myself in this.”
NDLEA Chairman, Mr. Ahmadu Giade, advised members of the public to avoid crime and promote societal peace.
He said, “I call on members of the public to shun criminal acts such as drug trafficking and money laundering.
“The NDLEA will continue to adopt measures aimed at frustrating the activities of drug syndicates in the country. In addition to arrest, drug traffickers shall be diligently prosecuted and made to forfeit all ill-gotten proceeds of drugs.
“No drug trafficker shall go unpunished. The suspect will be charged to court at the conclusion of investigations.”

MEET NIGERIA'S YOUNGEST MICROSOFT CERTIFIED PROFESSIONAL

Boy,9, becomes Nigeria’s youngest Microsoft certified professional

Jomiloju
A primary six pupil of Role Model School, Oregun, Ikeja, Lagos, has emerged one of the youngest pupils to obtain the Microsoft Certified Professional certificate, SAMUEL AWOYINFA reports
A nine-year-old pupil of Role Model School, Oregun, Ikeja, Lagos, Jomiloju Tunde-Oladipo, has emerged the youngest Nigerian Microsoft certified professional.
He came tops among 21 pupils who sat for the professional examination in Lagos.
He is now a Microsoft office specialist in office word 2010.
Jomiloju scored 769 out of 1,000 in the examination held in August.
In his examination score report, the slim-built boy performed well in Sharing and Maintaining Documents, Formatting Content, Applying Page Layout, and Reusable Content, among other subjects.
By the feat, Jomiloju has joined the league of young Microsoft certified professionals, including Nigeria’s 10-year-old Anjolaoluwa Seyi-Ojo;  an eight-year-old Indian, Lavishnashree, and two Pakistanis, named Arfa and Thobani.
Microsoft Certified Professional is a certification programme provided by Microsoft Corporation. The certification is tailored towards building skills on Microsoft business solutions, focusing on client-end operating systems such as windows XP, Vista, Windows7 among others.
Jomiloju, whose certificate was signed by the Chief Executive Officer, Microsoft Corporation, Steven Ballmer, says he did not achieve this feat easily, but through persistence and hard work.
He says, “It was not all that easy, because I had attempted the examination last year, I did not make it then. But I remained focused and I put in a lot of hard work.
“At home and in the school, I am always on the computer. After school hours, if am not doing anything, I will go to my Information Communication Technology teacher, to learn more.”
Jomiloju sat for the examination when he was in primary Five.
Relating his experience, Jomiloju says, “In all, I answered 20 questions, after answering a question, the computer takes you to another one. And at times, there will be an instruction to skip the next question. But the programme still directs one to come back to those questions one had earlier skipped.”
But was he really scared having failed once to meet the cut off mark? He stresses that he was really afraid due to his earlier experience but he was optimistic of having success, because according to him, he has prepared well.
He also gives kudos to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tunde-Ladipo, for their support and imbuing in him the ‘can do’ spirit in achieving the success.
He says, “My mum and dad were very supportive. They always tell me never to give up and eventually it paid off. Moreover, they had bought the latest Dell laptop. Again, I am always fascinated about computer. The way it works and the process, and the way it organises data.”
Jomiloju who is a left-handed writer, according to his parents, has been a gifted child. He has always been in love with gadgets. His mum, Toyin, says, “Jomiloju since he was baby had loved playing with gadgets, he was never interested in toys. He would pick up remote controls for both TV and air-conditioner, and he would correctly use them for their specific functions.”
His father adds, “It is not that we are unnecessarily indulging him but he is such a brilliant child. He’s multi-talented. He plays the saxophone, he’s good on keyboard, he acts very well and he’s a good swimmer.
“Each term, he participates in school drama and quiz. He also gets prizes in other subjects, apart from ICT.”
Does Jomiloju want to pursue a career in software/hardware project like Bill Gates and Steve Job?  Spotting an innocent smile, the youngster nods his head in affirmative.
His school administrator, Mrs. Adesimbo Banjo, who speaks glowingly about Jomiloju, says the feat recorded by her pupil is a tonic for other pupils.
His ICT teacher, Mr. Mathew Alo, also commends Jomiloju for the feat.
He adds, “Jomiloju was taught all the necessary things he needed to know and he came out as the most outstanding among  20 others from different schools in Lagos.
His class teacher, Mrs. Elizabeth Ogunrinola, says Jomiloju takes his studies seriously. She states, “He is not only good in ICT, but in other subjects. He is hard working and well behaved.”
For Jomiloju, he’s not resting on his oars yet, as he says he is still going to seek more Microsoft certifications.
“I still want to sit for more examinations. I will still do excel and power points,” he says.

FG STOPS PAYMENT OF LECTURERS SALARIES

The Federal Government may have decided to utilize a fire-for-fire approach in its dealings with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) as it has now reportedly adopted the “no work, no pay” policy.
Due to the unflinching stance of the academic body on its demands and its continuation of the almost 4 month old strike, the government has reportedly resolved that the striking lecturers are not entitled to salaries.
This development was revealed by a credible source who disclosed that instructions had been given to the governing councils of the various universities to stop paying the salaries of the striking lecturers.
Nigerian Eye reports:
The ASUU Zonal Chairman in Abuja, Mr Clement Chup confirmed this yesterday after a zonal conference of ASUU, University of Abuja chapter, which took place at the Gwagwalada campus to review the nationwide strike.
He said his colleagues were yet to receive their September salaries.
According to him, “we have resorted to other welfare strategies to cope with the effect of the strike, particularly to contain the various attempts by government to break the resolve of the union. The Federal Government has through the National Universities Commission, directed universities to stop the payment of our salaries effective September this year and since then our salaries have not been paid.
“Part of the welfare strategy, involved distributing food items, giving out soft loans and cash advances to members.”
He urged members of the public to ignore the rumour that the strike has been called off.
He said: “Nigerians should disregard rumours making the rounds that the three months old strike has been called off”, adding that “the strike continues until the government demonstrates a positive inclination towards implementing the 2009 agreements and the 2012 Memorandum of Understanding signed by both parties.”

Heather Koon Raped Babies At Ohio Daycare, Filmed At Least One Incident: Police (UPDATED)

She was trusted to take care of defenseless children, but now one Ohio daycare worker is accused of doing the unthinkable -- and filming it.

Heather Koon, 25, faces two counts of rape after police say they found video on her laptop of her "engaging in sexual conduct with an unknown infant." An investigation also revealed an additional victim, according to WOIO.

Police allegedly found the video on Koon's laptop at the apartment where her boyfriend, James Osborne, lives. Osborne is a registered sex offender. Both Koon and Osborne were arrested Oct. 4 within hours of each other, and were held at Lorain County Jail.

UPDATE: Oct. 8, 8:15 a.m. -- At her arraignment Oct. 7, prosecutors said that the state has "very strong evidence" against Koon, and stated that her alleged victims were between the ages 1 and 2, WKYC reported. Her bond was set at $2 million -- $1 million for each felony count.
WKYC reported that both sexual assaults took place at ABC Kidz child care in Elyria. Concerned parents said they fear their children may also be victims.

"He doesn't like his diaper being changed. He doesn't like being touched... When I used to drop him off there he used to scream so bad that he would be like hyperventilating," Andrea Lankey, whose 2-year-old was under Koon's care, told the station.

In a statement, Carlos Johnson, the attorney for ABC Kidz, said the company does not believe there were other victims:

"The daycare in cooperating with the investigation and we’re compiling a list to determine which kids were present while she, Heather Koon, worked there. We do not think there are more victims, but out of the abundance of cautiousness we want to make sure that we are correct."
The father of the victim in the video told WOIO that representatives from ABC Kidz "tried to act like it was a simple assault" when they contacted him.

"A few hours later they called us back again and asked us to keep it discreet," the father, who wishes to remain anonymous, told the station.

Sadly, this isn't the first time a daycare employee has been accused of molesting children. In 2012, an instructor at a Pittsburgh daycare was sentenced to at least 35 years in prison for sexually assaulting 12 boys over a period of several years.

MAN WHO FOUND BOSTON BOMBING SUSPECT GETS NEW BOAT

David Henneberry, Man Who Found Boston Marathon Bombing Suspect, Gets New Boat Thanks To Strangers

Good karma (and kindness) wins again.
David Henneberry, the man who found the Boston Marathon bombing suspect in his boat, can finally set sail again -- thanks to the generosity of strangers.
In April, after the Watertown, Mass., lockdown was lifted, Henneberry discovered 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev hiding in a boat in his backyard. He immediately called the police.
"He didn't try to be a hero. He didn't yell," Robert Duffy, Henneberry's stepson, told 'Today' in April. "His mind instantly did the right thing."
After a two-hour firefight, Tsarnaev was captured, but Henneberry's boat was severely damaged in the process.
Kind strangers decided to take care of that.
A man named Craig Dunlap started a campaign on the fundraising site Crowdtilt. He appropriately named it "Let's Fix David Henneberry's Boat (That Got Ruined in the Boston Bomber's Standoff)!" and set a goal of $50,000

Over 50 students of the Niger Delta University (NDU) owned by Bayelsa state reportedly escaped death on Friday when a lecture theater under construction collapsed at the permanent site of the institution.
According to sources, the collapse was said to have been caused by an alleged attempt by the contractors to cut corners.
It was gathered by newsmen  from an eyewitness identified as Preye, that the site engineers had reportedly turned down all request by workers to apply standard procedure in the construction of the lecture theater.
Leadership Newspapers reports:
“Instead of using  eight pans of sand and 12 pans of chipping, but  he uses 15 pans of sand  which is in excess.
“16mm is the ideal iron rod for  the first decking,  but he used 12mm iron rods. The pillars were not well cast; from the DPC, there was no proper base,”  he said.
Top members of the Nigeria Institute of Architects (NIA) who visited the scene of the collapsed building, attributed the collapse to the use of quack engineers for construction and announced its decision to set up a high powered committee to investigate the incident.
Leading the team of  Architects the state chairman of the NIA, Stella Rain, said though a high powered committee had been set up to investigate the incident, the NIA had always warned  against the use of quacks on construction sites in the state.
Chancellor of the NDU, Professor Humfrey Okonjo, told the team that the project monitoring team of the Institution informed him on the defects of  the building, and they were in the process of finding solution to it when the building collapsed.

This Video Will Make You Root For Homecoming Queen Finalist Who Has Down Syndrome

With her easygoing personality and friendly smile, it's no wonder Emily Jacobs was elected to her school's homecoming court.
The 17-year-old senior also has Down syndrome, Patch reports, but that hasn't stopped her from winning over her classmates in Rochester Hills, Mich.
"I was jumping up and down," she said about finding out she is a finalist for homecoming queen. The winners will be named at Friday's football game.
It's not just Emily's classmates who are rallying behind her. A local shop provided a dress for the dance, and as she tried it on at Flirty Fashions, teachers came with her.
"We knew a lot of people supported Emily, but we didn't realize how many people were behind her," Cheryl Jacobs, Emily's mom, told Patch.
"I'm looking forward to go out there and show them what I got," Emily said.

WOMAN FINDS LOVE AFTER BEING DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER

Lynsey Austin, Cancer Patient, Finds Love In Glenn Harker, Her Ambulance Driver (PHOTO)

What should have been one of the toughest times for a British mother and cancer patient ended up becoming the pivotal period that led her to the love of her life.
Lynsey Austin, 36, of Hemlington in the UK, was diagnosed with leukemia in 2008, the Daily Mirror reports. Her intensive chemotherapy course and additional health complications meant frequent trips to the hospital over the next two years.
It also meant that she spent a significant amount of time with Glenn Harker, the Patient Transport Service driver who began shuttling her to and from her treatments in 2009, and lifting her spirits along the way.
Story continues after photo.

“I was going for a bone marrow biopsy and he made me laugh all the way," Austin told the Mirror.
The 42-year-old ambulance driver then looked up his patient on Facebook. “We just started chatting and it went from there,” Austin told the Evening Gazette.
The fifth anniversary of Austin's diagnosis is now looming, and Harker is still by her side. He proposed on her last birthday, and the pair is currently planning their dream wedding along with Austin's 13-year-old son, Ethan.
“My health’s not been great, I still had to go back in for biopsies, and have had problems with my lungs," Austin told the Evening Gazette, "but Glenn has been a rock.”
Their uplifting story reminds us of another couple who found love in an unlikely place. Jessica Moreland and Jordan Rice, who were both widowed in their 20s, managed to find love in each other. They were married in June.

TEN MEN JAILED FOR 34 YEARS FOR SEXUAL ABUSE

Ten men jailed for 34 years for sexually exploiting teenager, 13, after mother discovers shocking content on girl's phone

  • Girl posted a profile on a dating website claiming to be aged 18
  • A total of thirty men aged 14-45 were in touch with the teenager
  • They were tracked down after mother found sexual content on her phone
  • She is now emotionally scarred and is under intensive treatment

Ten men have been jailed for a total of 34 years after sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl who posted a profile on a dating website.
Dozens of men contacted the teenager after seeing her details online - but while many broke off contact when they discovered her true age, others continued to pursue her for sex.
A total of 30 suspects from all around the country, none of whom knew each other, committed offences against the girl, including having sex with her and persuading her to send explicit pictures of themselves.

Abuse: Adam Noble, left, and Matthew Horrocks, right, are among 10 men jailed for sexually assaulting a teenage girl; they were sentenced to six years and two years and four months in prison respectively

The girl, from North Yorkshire, was left mentally scarred by her experiences, and is now receiving intensive professional help.
She made the dating profile, on which she claimed to be 18, because she was looking for a romantic relationship, but the men who responded were only interested in sex.

The paedophiles ranged in age from 20 to 45, with one 14-year-old boy also implicated.
The first offender, 39-year-old Mark Harris, had sex with the girl shortly after she turned 13 after meeting her through a friend.
Harris, who was sentenced to four and a half years in prison, was 'turning a frightened child into a very sexualised child'.

Mark Lindsay, 33, encouraged the victim to lie to her parents, telling them she was having a sleepover with a friend when she was in face travelling to his house for sex.
Her mother suspected something was wrong after the girl got lost on her way home, and examined her mobile phone.
She found a large number of highly sexual text messages and pictures on the child’s mobile phone and handed it to officers. They used it and other evidence to track down the suspects.
The men who were found to have had sexual contact with the girl included a teacher, a shop worker, a travelling salesman and others.
Detective Chief Superintendent Simon Mason, head of crime at North Yorkshire Police, said: 'This investigation uncovered large-scale exploitation of a child for the sexual gratification of several men, some of whom were married and had successful careers.
'Although some of the suspects ceased all contact with the girl when they discovered her age, many didn’t and they have been punished appropriately for their crimes.
'The scale of the data analysed to reach such a conclusion is matched only by the determination and dedication of the investigation team and our safeguarding partners all of whom acted in close partnership. I am very proud of their efforts in what was a difficult investigation.
'We all have a responsibility to ensure our children are safe and to that end North Yorkshire Police works with numerous agencies to educate professionals, parents and children to safeguard children from harm.'

One man is still awaiting sentence, one has received a community order while others have been cautioned.
The 12 men who were convicted were banned from working with children for life and placed on the sex offenders register.
Claude Knights, chief executive of national child safety charity Kidscape, said: 'These are very, very serious crimes. I think this case reinforces the message that parents should talk to their children about their online activity and should increase their own knowledge of the internet.'
